Use md-edit with Claude

Last updated: October 28, 2026

The short version

Before you start

Connect md-edit

From Claude's connector directory

  1. In Claude, go to Customize, then Connectors.
  2. Select Discover and search for MD-Edit.
  3. Open the MD-Edit listing and select Connect to Claude. md-edit's sign-in page opens: in the same tab on claude.ai, or in your browser if you use the desktop app.
  4. Sign in with the account you use on md-edit, then click Allow access. Back in Claude, MD-Edit is listed under Your connectors as Connected.

As a custom connector

If MD-Edit doesn't show up in the directory, or you'd rather add it by URL:

  1. In Claude, go to Customize, then Connectors, and choose Add custom connector (it may sit behind a + button).
  2. Enter MD-Edit as the name and https://api.md-edit.com/functions/v1/mcp as the URL. If the dialog offers more options, choose Sign in now and Register automatically, and leave the client ID and secret empty. Then click Add.
  3. If md-edit's sign-in page doesn't open on its own, select MD-Edit under Your connectors and click Connect.
  4. Sign in with the account you use on md-edit, then click Allow access.

Claude's free plan allows one custom connector. Paid plans have no limit.

In Claude Code

Connectors you add in Claude also work in Claude Code when you sign in with the same Claude account. To add md-edit to Claude Code by itself, run:

claude mcp add --transport http md-edit https://api.md-edit.com/functions/v1/mcp

Then type /mcp in Claude Code, choose md-edit, and sign in.

Setup guide in the app

Already signed in to md-edit? The Claude setup guide inside the app walks you through the same steps and can also add an md-edit skill to Claude, which teaches it md-edit's conventions, such as linking one document to another.

Things to try

Ask in plain language. For example:

Share context with other people

md-edit lets you hand context from your Claude to someone else's. Put what they need in documents, such as a project brief, research notes or the decisions made so far, and share them. Their Claude reads the documents through their own md-edit connection, so you both work from the same context without pasting it back and forth.

  1. Save it. Ask Claude to write up the context and save it to md-edit, or use documents you already have.
  2. Share it. Ask Claude to share each document with the other person's email address, or use the share button in md-edit. They get an email invitation.
  3. They pick it up. Once they're signed in to md-edit with that email address (the invitation link takes them there), the documents are in their library, marked as shared with them. Their Claude can find and read them like any of their own documents.

How your documents stay safe

Privacy

Claude reaches your library with an access token that md-edit issues when you click Allow access. It can only act on your own account.

md-edit stores four things about the connection itself: the platform name, an anonymous client ID, when you connected, and a usage count.

When you share a document, the people you share it with can read it, and so can their Claude through their own md-edit connection. With edit access, they can also change it.

Anything Claude reads from md-edit becomes part of your Claude conversation, which Anthropic handles under its own privacy policy. Our Privacy Policy has the full details for md-edit.

Disconnect

In Claude, go to Customize > Connectors, select MD-Edit and click Disconnect. This signs Claude out of md-edit straight away, and your documents stay exactly where they are. To take MD-Edit off your list entirely, open its three-dot menu and choose Remove.

Troubleshooting

Claude can't find a document

Check that the document is synced to MD-Edit Cloud. Claude can't see documents kept only in your browser or synced to Google Drive. If someone shared it with you, check that they used the email address of your md-edit account.

Claude can't edit a shared document

The document is shared with you view-only, or your md-edit account is on the free plan. For a view-only document, Claude offers to save your changes as a new document in your own library; it won't update when the owner changes the original. With edit access on the free plan you can still edit it in md-edit itself; editing through Claude needs Pro. Only the owner can delete a shared document or move it between folders.

Claude says a tool needs a Pro plan

That tool is part of Pro. Reading, searching and creating documents work on the free plan.

Claude reports a conflict

The document changed after Claude read it, usually because you were editing it at the same moment. Nothing was overwritten. Claude re-reads the document and applies its change on top of yours.

MD-Edit shows Connect or Reconnect

Claude isn't signed in to md-edit, or its sign-in expired. Under Customize > Connectors, select MD-Edit, click Connect or Reconnect, and sign in with the same account you use on md-edit.
